AISC Seismic Provisions Section D2 requires all bolts in the seismic force-resisting system to be pretensioned, with the additional requirement that the joint's faying surfaces meet Class A conditions for slip-critical joints. Unless noted otherwise, however, bolted joints need not be designed as slip critical. Some bolted joints in prequalified connections waive the faying surface requirements of the AISC Seismic Provisions.
