Unless otherwise specified in the standard, column-beam moment ratios for prequalified connections follow the requirements of AISC Seismic Provisions Section E3.4a for SMF. The AISC Seismic Provisions have no column-beam moment ratio requirements for IMF, and no additional requirements are imposed by this standard for prequalified connections used in IMF.
The column-beam moment ratio requirements for SMF in AISC Seismic Provisions Section E3.4a are primarily intended for planar frames, where there are no moment frame beams in orthogonal or multi-axial directions. For cases with moment frame beams in orthogonal or multi-axial directions, AISC Seismic Provisions Section E3.3 requires that the potential for beam yielding in both orthogonal directions simultaneously be considered when checking the column-beam moment ratio. Interpreting this requirement will require judgment that can be guided by AISC Seismic Provisions Section E3.3 Commentary.
The ConXtech ConXL connection is typically used in a biaxial configuration. This connection was tested in biaxial configurations and specific requirements for checking the column-beam moment ratio are provided in Chapter 10.
